WORKSHOPS

CHILDREN

School children enjoying the performanceThe Chameleons have taught thousands of children from California to China, from Long Island, New York, to Liverpool, England! With a little time and a measure of direction children are able to create their own Story Mime Theatre performances for their parents and friends.

Workshops
The Chameleons’ specially designed workshops teach students to use movement to express their imaginations and to depict imagery, character, emotion, and story. Students develop skills in handling invisible objects (pantomime) to create the illusion of place, shape, rhythm, and weight. Over the years, teachers have employed The Chameleons’ famous Stealth Walk Game as a means of gaining focus, having fun, and challenging the students to walk into the classroom in total silence!

Residencies
The Chameleons expand on what is covered in the single workshop to create a “conservatory” experience of the art form. Developing fundamental sills of mime and pantomime, students learn techniques from the highly disciplined American Mime Theatre School, as well as physical comedy, narrated mime, vocal effects, and music. Finally, the students work toward a thrilling culmination program for parents, other students, and teachers. The culmination is a performance developed by The Chameleons in collaboration with students, at times using content from grade level curriculum.

The Chameleons’ residencies employ a highly effective method of kinesthetic learning giving the students the rare opportunity to engage as a true ensemble, where each student has a (silent) “voice.”

Adults

The Chameleons’ physical theatre workshop is open to actors, dancers, directors, college students, and all movement-based performers. This class is designed to greatly enhance and transform the performer’s quality of movement and physical presence on stage. Students learn to create a powerful feeling of believability and empathy through their movement, characters, and interaction. Students also create their own original movement-based performance material.

EDUCATORS
(Professional Development)

Educators (K-12)
Berger & Diskin present a highly entertaining and educational Mime Theatre workshop for teachers of all grade levels. Educators acquire mimetic skills and methods for imparting this amazing art of the imagination to their students. This class covers the depiction of imagery in space (Pantomime), kinesthetic movement exercises as a way to interpret vocabulary words, and short plays (scenes) with easy staging techniques that can be applied to any type of student presentation. Teachers can readily incorporate some of the techniques to connect to curriculum.

The Chameleons also feature two special PDs where teachers lead their students in mimetic interpretations of Sergei Prokofiev’s Peter & The Wolf (a classic musical story with narrated recordings in both English and Spanish) and Camille Saint- Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals.
